The Day

A Short Ceremony And A Long Afternoon

A Cambridge Register Office ceremony runs to about half an hour, which sounds like very little until you are in the room. Two of them, the people closest to them, and the children handing over the rings. There is no rehearsal and no second chance at any of it, so knowing where to stand is most of the job.

Afterwards we drove out to Madingley Hall and spent the rest of the afternoon in the grounds. The hedges, the terrace, the hazel walk and a mown field with the house behind it. Nothing about it needed arranging, which is usually the sign of a good hour.

Zita and Aurelian in the gardens at Madingley Hall

Half an hour at Cambridge Register Office, then a long afternoon in the grounds at Madingley. Not every wedding needs a cathedral and a hundred and fifty guests.
